Are you consuming too much plastic without even knowing it?

Sep 16, 2024

How are microplastics sneaking into your healthy foods?

A recent study published in the journal Ecotoxicology and Public Health reveals that cutting boards made of plastic, particularly polypropylene and polyethylene, can contaminate food with microplastics. Researchers found up to 1,114 microplastic particles per cutting session, with potential annual exposure estimated at 50 grams per person. These microplastics vary depending on cutting style, knife sharpness, and food type, potentially posing health risks as they can interfere with bodily systems and carry chemical additives. Sources of microplastics include not only cutting boards but also everyday items like tires and water bottle caps. To minimize exposure, options include using alternative cutting board materials like wood or bamboo, avoiding plastic utensils, and filtering water.

Why should you be worried about microplastics?

Growing evidence indicates that microplastics pose potential health risks, as they have been detected in human lungs, blood, and even the placenta. Researchers in South Korea have raised concerns about their impact, noting that microplastics can interfere with digestive and respiratory systems and disrupt endocrine and reproductive systems due to the chemical additives they release. Sources of microplastics include degraded plastic objects such as tires, with tire dust contributing significantly to ocean pollution. The caps of water bottles also present a concern as they can release particles directly into drinking water. While the full extent of microplastic health effects is still being understood, studies suggest they can absorb harmful chemicals and microorganisms, leading to developmental delays, behavioral changes, infertility, and weakened immune systems in animals. Additionally, microplastics can be contaminated with toxic additives, posing further risks if ingested.

How can you minimize your exposure to microplastics?

- Avoid drinking from disposable plastic water bottles; if necessary, store them away from sunlight in a cool, dry place.

- Avoid using Microwave, if at all possible, but if you have to, microwave your food in glass containers instead of plastic, as heating plastic can release microplastic particles.

- Use a water filter to reduce microplastic contamination, as plastic pollution can lead to their presence in water.

- Regularly dust and vacuum your kitchen to minimize the presence of microplastic fibers that could contaminate food.
