Fatty Liver Disease

Jun 17, 2024

Fatty Liver Disease is much more common that most people realize.

What are some common causes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)?

  • Being overweight or obese.
  • Insulin resistance, in which your cells don't take up sugar in response to the insulin.
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia), indicating pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes.
  • High levels of fats, particularly triglycerides, in the blood.

What are some risk factors for developing NAFLD?

  • High cholesterol- mainly high LDL OR bad cholesterol.
  • High levels of triglycerides.
  • Metabolic syndrome.
  • Obesity, particularly when fat is concentrated in the abdomen.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome.
  • Sleep apnea.
  • Type 2 diabetes.
  • Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).

How can nutritional healing (my specialty) help people with NAFLD OR people who are at risk for developing it?

Food is our medicine in so many ways. We need to think of food not only as a fuel for our body to function properly, but also as the optimal medicine that heals our body.

The right fuel not only nourishes our body but also helps with:

Being at a healthy weight/ body composition

Regulating and maintaining a healthy blood sugar

A healthy amount of body fat which will support an overall healthy life.

The right types of healthy fats help us maintain optimal cholesterol levels, burn unwanted and harmful fats and avoid excess fat storage in the liver.

Regulate our hormones by consuming the right types of proteins to support a healthy hormonal and adrenal health.
