Is Protein Wrecking Your Kidneys—Here’s What Actually Matters
May 04, 2026
If you’ve ever worried that a high‑protein diet might “wreck your kidneys” or enlarge your organs, you’re not alone.
For years, dramatic photos of bodybuilders with distended abdomens have been circulating online, and protein took the blame.
A new imaging study in competitive bodybuilders tells a very different story.
Researchers compared:
- Recreationally active men
- Natural bodybuilders (no performance‑enhancing drugs)
- Bodybuilders using anabolic steroids, growth hormone, insulin, thyroid drugs, and more
All of them tracked their diet for a week. The natural bodybuilders were eating very high‑protein diets—around 2.5 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day—plus years of intense training.
What did the MRI scans show?
- Natural bodybuilders had normal liver, heart, spleen, and kidney sizes, similar to non‑bodybuilders.
- The only group with enlarged organs and the classic “bubble gut” look were the athletes using performance‑enhancing drugs.
- In other words, organ enlargement was linked to the drugs, not to protein intake.
This lines up with other human studies showing that, in healthy people, higher‑protein diets do not damage kidney or liver function.
So if your labs are stable and you’re otherwise healthy, protein itself is not the enemy. The bigger questions are:
- What quality of protein are you eating?
- What else comes packaged with it—hormones, pesticides, inflammatory fats, or, in extreme cases, pharmaceutical drugs?
In my practice I emphasize:
- Grass‑fed, pasture‑raised beef and lamb
- Pasture‑raised poultry and eggs
- Wild‑caught fish and seafood
- Clean, third‑party‑tested protein powders when needed
And I encourage minimizing grain‑fed feedlot meat, caged eggs, farmed fish, and ultra‑processed “protein foods.”
You don’t need to fear protein.
You need the right amount of the right protein, matched to your body, your labs, and your goals.
