Is the Protein Trend Actually Making Us Healthier?

Aug 01, 2026

Everyone is talking about protein. It is on the front of chip bags, mixed into coffee creamers, stamped across candy bars, and marketed as the answer to almost every health concern. And yet — despite eating more protein than ever — Americans are not getting healthier.

That disconnect is not a coincidence. And it is exactly what I talk about with my clients every single day.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently published a piece that stopped me in my tracks — not because it surprised me, but because it confirmed what I have been saying in practice for years: more protein does not automatically mean better health.

The Protein Trend Has a Dark Side

Here is what most people do not know. The majority of "high protein" products flooding the market are ultra-processed foods — meaning they contain artificial dyes, sweeteners, and additives you would never find in a real kitchen. Ultra-processed foods already make up more than half of the typical adult diet in the U.S. and are considered a key driver of chronic disease. Slapping a protein label on them does not change that equation.

Even more alarming: protein supplements — powders, bars, ready-to-drink shakes — are classified as dietary supplements, which means the FDA does not regulate them the same way as food. Manufacturers essentially police themselves. A 2025 investigation found detectable lead in nearly every sample of protein powder and shake tested, and nearly half of protein supplements exceeded at least one state or federal safety limit for lead, cadmium, mercury, or arsenic.

Let that sink in. People are adding these products to their smoothies every morning thinking they are building health. In some cases, they may be doing the opposite.

What Most People Are Actually Missing

Here is the real nutritional gap: it is not protein. The average U.S. adult already meets or exceeds daily protein recommendations. What most people fall critically short on is fiber — over 90% of women and 97% of men do not reach the recommended 25 to 38 grams per day.

Fiber is what feeds your gut microbiome. It stabilizes blood sugar. It reduces inflammation. It protects against heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer. And it is almost entirely absent from the ultra-processed protein products people are reaching for.

This is the mismatch I see in practice constantly: people optimizing for protein while unknowingly starving the very systems that make protein usable.

What I Teach Instead

My philosophy has always been food as medicine, and the foundation of that is whole, clean, minimally processed foods that nourish the body at a cellular level. When it comes to protein, that means:

  • Prioritizing whole-food sources — wild-caught fish, pasture-raised eggs, organic poultry, legumes, nuts, and seeds
  • Pairing protein with fiber so your blood sugar stays stable and your gut stays fed
  • Choosing supplements strategically and carefully — only from vetted, third-party tested sources, and only when there is a true clinical need
  • Removing ultra-processed "health" foods that are creating inflammation while masquerading as wellness

And above all, I look at the individual — their labs, their symptoms, their history, their goals — before making any protein recommendation. A cancer patient in recovery, a woman navigating perimenopause, someone with Type 2 diabetes, and a high-performing athlete all need a completely different approach. Generic advice is not good enough when your health is on the line.

The Question Worth Asking Yourself

Before you add another scoop of protein powder to your morning routine, pause and ask: Is this actually nourishing me? Do I know what is in it and where it came from? Is this moving me toward health or just checking a trend box?
